They don't even like Durian! And I LOVE DURIAN!! Me & kids dont get to visit Malaysia and it's been few years. I miss lots of things. When hubby flew there on his bussiness trip, i kinda forced him to bring back food he is not even familiar with.

Ingredients and spices that need to be Take to make Malaysian Fish Pekasam (Fermented Salted fish):

  1. 2 packets Fish Pekasam
  2. Young turmeric leaves - FINELY/THINLY SLICED
  3. Big chillies - both red & green - chopped
  4. Bird eyed chillies - chopped
  5. Red onion or shallots - sliced
  6. Brown onion - sliced
  7. MSG - optional
  8. Enough oil

Instructions to make Malaysian Fish Pekasam (Fermented Salted fish)

  1. Despite growing up eating fish Pekasam, i never get to learn to make one. Below is my treasured stash, all the way from Malaysia πŸ‡²πŸ‡Ύ Pekasam made with many types of fish, and then again, i am not familiar with kinds of fish listed on the packet πŸ˜ͺ (the truth is, the only fish i can 110% confident identifying is Salmon πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…). When i have my Pekasam, hubby and kids have their usual, Creamy Cheesy Mushroom sauce accompanying mussels, Bbq-ed meat, garlic breads, potatoes, brocolini & asparagus.
  2. Prep all ingredients πŸ‘‰πŸ» finely/thinly slice turmeric leaves (see pic). Chop chillies & slice onions.
  3. Cut fish into small bite; see pic below. Heat oil in a pan or a wok. Fry the fish until golden brown. Remove from the wok and keep aside.

    Note: we sometimes chop our fermented fish into tiny pieces so it blends well with the rest of the ingredients.
  4. Add some oil to the same pan or wok. SautΓ© chillies, onions & turmeric leaves until fragrant. Add cooked/fried fermented fish & season with a pinch of MSG.
  5. Stir to combine everything. Cook for another 2 - 3 minutes. Transfer out and serve with hot rice.
