Fish is a part of any Bengali family’s staple diet and so is always available in my pantry. Often when fishes like katla or bhetki are left over in my refrigerator for not being cooked in a week, this is the best way I utilise to make fish pakodas.

- 4 Bhetki fish steaks
- 1/4 cup vinegar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp crushed peppercorn
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 onion
- 1/2 tsp ginger paste
- 1/2 tsp garlic paste
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/4 tsp red chilli powder
- 1/4 tsp coriander powder
- 1/4 tsp cumin powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
- Batter
- 1/4 cup besan flour
- 1/4 cup rice flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions to make Fish Pakoda
- Boil the fishes in a cup of water, 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/2 tsp salt and 1 tsp crushed pepper corns. Cool the fishes and remove the bones carefully and mash it. Now in vegetable oil fry onions, garlic cloves and ginger paste, add mashed fish, add salt to taste, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, cumin and coriander powder, garam masala powder and fry till the raw smell is gone. Now the fish mixture is ready.
- Now prepare a batter with besan, rice flour, salt.
- Make balls of shape of your own choice by just wetting hands with slight oil, dip in the batter and deep fry. Serve with sauce or Chutney of your choice.
